TELEHEALTH IN MELBOURNE, FLORIDA

Fun fact: The Melbourne airport was once a military base.

Melbourne area offers some of the nicest beaches to enjoy on the Space Coast!

After all, what other beach offers free views of rocket launches?

Sometimes though, Portugese man-of-war can wash ashore on the Melbourne coast. Fortunately they tend to disappear as quickly as they appear.

The beautiful clear and dark blue/purple bodied jelly like creatures are very visible at about the size of a golf ball, and they float!

Be sure to avoid them in the water and on shore, as they can sting in both scenarios despite they are not a true jellyfish.

A sting can result in severe pain, skin lesions and skin necrosis.

Monitor for any uncommon systemic symptoms such as: vomiting, abdominal pain, muscle spasms, headache, syncope, confusion, shortness of breath, and chest pain. Should you suffer a sting and have these symptoms, present to the emergency department immediately. Awareness is key!

The Melbourne area is also home to many breweries with very unique brews! Intracoastal Brewing Company is definitely worth a visit.

Not to worry, if you over indulge and suffer a gout flare, telehealth can help with that!

The Cons:

Florida is home to many insects, including mosquitos, spiders and scorpions. Fortunately insect bites are common complaints which are easily handled via telehealth!

The Saharan dust blowing over Florida in the summer months has caused a lot of new or recurrent allergies and sinusitis in individuals. Fortunately allergies, upper respiratory tract infections, and sinusitis are common complaints which are also easily handled via telehealth!

Regarding Health and Wellness

Many things nowadays, especially with the assistance of smart technology can be addressed safely, effectively, and conveniently via telehealth or virtual care. For example, many individuals now have automatic blood pressure cuffs, smart watches which monitor the heart rate and even the rhythm, pulse oximetry, blood sugars monitors, and more in their home. These self assessment resources aid the individual, and also help to facilitate the remote health care experience you have with your online doctor or provider.

However, when health really isn’t going as planned, and individuals need hands-on acute or specialty care which cannot be provided via telemedicine, I like to recommend reputable and reliable resources in the community.

Some Activities I Personally Suggest:

  • Catch a surfing competition at a local beach
  • Stop by a food truck for lunch any many of the various beach access lots
  • Take a walk through the lovely Eau Gallie Arts District (EGAD)
  • Stop in Anaya in EGAD for a a wonderful cup of coffee or tea
  • Enjoy live music in the evening at The Cottage Irish Pub or Pineapples in EGAD!
  • Watch a rocket launch from the beach!
  • Canoe at Manatee Cove Park and see some dolphins or manatees along the way!

In need of specialty, acute or emergency care?

Health First’s Holmes Regional Medical Center near downtown Melbourne is the largest non-profit Hospital on the Space coast with 514 beds. It is the only level II trauma center, and neonatal level II trauma center in Brevard County.

Melbourne Regional Medical Center (MRMC), a Steward Health Care Hospital with just under 100 beds, achieved a grade “A” in patient safety by the Leapfrog Group in 2022.

The top five hospitals in Florida are noted to be Mayo Clinic Jacksonville, University of Florida Shands Hospital in Gainesville, Tampa General Hospital in Tampa, Cleveland Clinic in Weston, and Advent Health in Orlando.
For reference, the top five hospitals in the nation are Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota; Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston; Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore; Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland; and New York-Presbyterian Hospital-Columbia and Cornell, New York.

This data analysis is from Medicare and the American Hospital Association.
